Stage 5: Saved for good

Saved, with the whole story

The winner goes into your library. So does everything you need to trust it now and tune it later.

This is the payoff for the whole process. You do the work once, and you keep it forever.

What gets saved

Not just a row of numbers. The settings, a picture of the mark they make, how fast the recipe runs, and the runners-up that are worth keeping. Next time you touch this material, you start from proven instead of from scratch.

We keep the frontier, not just one winner

Often there is no single best recipe. There is the darkest one, and there is the fastest one that still looks right. Those are different answers for different jobs. The showpiece for a customer might want the darkest. A run of 500 tags wants the fastest that passes.

So the library keeps both. Collapsing everything down to one champion throws away the option you will actually want half the time, so we do not do it.

Recording what the mark really is

A shade is not enough to describe a mark. Take white on metal. One kind is a matte frost that looks the same from every angle. Another is a bright polish, basically a tiny mirror, that flashes when it catches the light and fades when it does not. Those are different products, not the same white at two brightness levels.

The library records which one it is, including how it behaves as you tilt it, so a saved recipe means what you think it means. This is the part that quietly makes everything else trustworthy: the mark is described by what it actually does, not by a single word.

You will understand it well enough to change it

Because you watched your material respond back in Stage 3, you did not just get a recipe, you got a feel for how it moves. When a future job needs a slightly different look, you will know which knob to reach for and which way to turn it. That is the real difference between borrowing settings and owning them.

That is the whole process, start to finish. Back to the Test Lab overview.
