Stop guessing at laser settings

You get a new piece of material. Maybe it is aluminum blanks for a customer order. Maybe walnut from the lumber yard. You have a laser, you have the material, and you want a mark that looks right.

So you Google it, and you get a Reddit thread from 2019 with three different answers, a Facebook group where everyone argues, and a vendor chart for a machine that is not yours. Thirty minutes later, you are still guessing.

The Test Lab is the fix. It finds the settings for your machine on your material, in about 30 minutes with a few pieces of scrap. You do it once. The settings are saved for good.

Before the laser fires, the Test Lab shows you what marks are physically possible on your material with your laser. Dark, frosted, bright, colored, deep. What each one really is under the hood.

This is also where you get the straight story. Some looks have hard physical limits. Bare aluminum, for example, tops out at a dark gray no matter whose settings you use. That is the material, not your machine falling short. You will see the best version that IS achievable, and you pick the one you are after. That choice steers everything that follows.

Find the neighborhood

Ballpark tier

One test card finds the rough zone where your mark lives.

One test card, burned on scrap. Instead of guessing settings, this card sweeps the kinds of laser behavior your material responds to and shows you where your chosen mark lives.

You look at the card and answer a few quick comparisons, darker or lighter, cleaner or rougher. For a lot of jobs, the best square on this card is already good enough to use today.

Dial it in

Zoom into the winning zone, one question at a time, until it is exactly right.

Now the Test Lab zooms into the neighborhood that won. Each card in this stage changes just enough to answer one question at a time. A little faster. A little more power. One more pass. Your comparisons steer the next card.

This is where pretty good becomes exactly right, and where the speed trade-off shows up. If two squares look the same and one burned in half the time, you will know.

The face-off

The finalists go head to head, burned twice, so a fluke cannot win.

The finalists go head to head on a single card, every candidate burned twice, side by side. Same plate, same day, same conditions, so the comparison is fair and a fluke cannot sneak through.

Why twice? Because one square can lie. Dust, an oily spot, a fleck of grain. If a recipe cannot produce the same square two times in a row, it loses, no matter how good one of them looks. After this stage the settings are not promising, they are proven.

Winners go into your library with the settings, the look, and the speed.

Winners go into your library with everything attached. The settings, what the mark looks like, how fast it runs, and the runners-up worth keeping, like the one that is nearly as good at twice the speed.

Next time you touch this material, you start from proven instead of from scratch. And if you ever want a different look on the same stock, you are one short test away, not five.

What you need

That is it. We pre-fill everything we can from what is already known about your machine and material, so most of the setup is done before you start. If you can answer "which one looks darker?", you are qualified.

Common questions

How long does the Test Lab take?

About 30 minutes for a full run on one material, using a few pieces of scrap. The first two stages alone get you solid ballpark settings much faster.

Do I need special tools or a camera?

No. Grading results is mostly answering simple questions like 'which of these two looks darker?'. No measuring gear, and photos are optional.

Why not just use a settings chart?

Charts get you close, and we keep a library of them. But settings from someone else's laser are not settings for yours. Machines drift, lenses differ, and your material is not the chart's material. The Test Lab finds settings proven on your machine.

How often do I have to do this?

Once per machine and material. The winning settings are saved to your library and reused forever. A different look on the same material is one short test away, not a fresh start.
